The permanent link is the fixed portion of the channel – in other words, the portion of a channel that doesn’t change. That means it does not include the patch cord or equipment cord in the “Channel”. One of the typical applications is in the telecom room to a workstation where a horizontal solid cable connects a patch panel in the telecom room and links a keystone jack in a workstation. The maximum permitted length of the permanent link is 90 meters.
Is “Permanent Link” important?
Permanent link test is crucial to cabling. We understand the entire channel performance is the final and real application, however, patch cords give lots of variants on channel performance. One bad scenario, is when channel testing with quality patch cords, the channel can pass even if the permanent link has failed. And this is awful, because permanent link is the fixed portion of the channel, also the true foundation of the cabling. Permanent link has to be passed first and the channel afterward. Besides, patch cords and equipment cords are handled and moved around a lot, and they may be purchased from a different (sometimes lower quality) vendor since they’re often considered commodities. Testing the permanent link is the best way to ensure performance at the time of installation.
